Summary Statement
Worker are using a gas powered cut saw to cut through spot welds on bridge deck. A plywood barrier is being used to protect workers and members of the public below bridge deck from sparks. A fire extinguisher should be readily available. Positive means should be made to confine sparks and slag. A worker should be assigned as a fire watch during and for a sufficient time afterwards to ensure that there is no possibility of fire.
Both workers should be using eye protection, face shields, hearing protection and potentially respiratory protection from metal dust and or lead based paint. One worker is being monitored for exposure to lead.
Work posture is awkward. A different type of saw may be more appropriate for this type of work.
