A partnership of contractors, the Laborers' Union, and state and federal agencies, including OSHA, was among 10 nominees for a NORA Partnering Award 2003, presented by NIOSH. The partnership is working to reduce silica exposures to workers during highway construction. The effort is focusing on engineering controls, such as wet methods to reduce dusts, and respirators, when other controls don't do enough. Silica, which is in concrete, asphalt, and other masonry products, can cause silicosis and increase the chances of getting lung cancer and tuberculosis.
